Food Storage is a
Family Affair
Food storage works best when the whole family gets involved. When everyone participates on some level as in a team effort, the resulting food storage is a much better rendition of what is practical, what will be eaten, how much is needed, and even an understanding of budgeting and smart shopping can come of it. With careful planning the goal of a full one year food storage supply can be rallied around and met. When the whole family is involved and gunning towards the same purpose of gathering food storage, there is a serious accountability factor and ample synergy. The end goal of a one year food storage supply is so well known and out in the open for every family member that it would be very difficult to brush it aside and forget, especially if there are built in positive consequences of rewards attached (more on that later).
Each Family Member is
Given a Food Storage Assignment
If food storage is left to fate, it falters. Organizing food storage accumulation by delegating assignments that include allotted time frames for completion sets up a return- and-report feature that makes for better follow through. Each member of the family should be given an age appropriate food storage assignment to fulfill. This is a great opportunity to educate children about stewardship and taking responsibility. Fulfilling their food storage assignments will give them satisfaction and pride in a job well done, even if it requires some assistance from Mom and Dad. At least in this case, and for a time, they get to be “The Boss” of something—their food storage item or assignment.
Food Storage Teaches
Self Reliance
Participating as a family in an effort to accumulate a full one year food storage supply is beneficial for the simple reason that it teaches family members that it is important to not rely upon sources outside of their own control or sphere of influence to come to their aid or rescue should harm, accident, disaster, or emergency befall them. Food storage and emergency supplies will alleviate somewhat the pain, suffering, and discomfort that generally follow chaotic conditions in the environment. Not always (or on time) will governmental agencies or other relief organizations’ efforts come with aid and supplies. Food storage prepared well in advance may also be drawn upon in times of financial hardship, causing less of a burden on loved ones and others to step in and help.
Food Storage Takes
Discipline
It seems like a Herculean task to have before you—a food storage goal of one full year’s supply. Sure, we are talking about more than peanuts and popcorn here. We’re talking about a substantial commitment, time wise and money wise. Family members will learn to reach and appreciate mileposts along the journey, and to “bite off” small chunks at a time. And getting back to the rewards spoken of near the beginning, this is another motivator and success factor. Discipline works best when there is a reward or rewards attached. This principle should be definitely be integrated into the family’s home food storage endeavor. Whether it’s certain sought-after privileges, family outings, “points” distributed for mileposts reached that can be redeemed for “prizes”, or whatever else is most motivating and fun, rewards play an important part in building family unity and cohesion, and the ambitious goal of a fantastic one year food storage supply!
